Youth engagement continues to be a hot topic in the non-profit sector, but how can we ensure we engage youth effectively? We’re asking the experts with a panel of three youth leaders discussing their experiences within the sector as well as tips for organizations looking to be purposeful in their youth strategies.

OUR PANELISTS

Hani Rukh-E-Qamar

Hani Rukh-E-Qamar is the Founder and Executive Director of the Canadian Advisory of Women Immigrants (CAWI), a youth-led NPO dedicated to empowering immigrant women. Currently, she is pursuing a B.Sc. in Psychology with a double minor in Health Geography and International Development Studies at McGill University, where she is also a Global Health Scholar. In addition, she serves on the Steering Committee for Women in Global Health (WGH), at the Canadian Association for Global Health (CAGH). This summer, Hani is working as a Research Assistant with Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Hani has received various awards for her work, such as the McGill Scarlet Key Society Award, Top 25 Canadian Immigrants finalist, and CAMIMH’s Champion of Mental Health Award. Her work has also been published in the news, particularly her nonprofit work with immigrant women and girls. This year, Hani also supported the Canadian Delegation to the Commission on Population and Development as the Canadian Youth Delegate. Additionally, she works on research topics related to mental and sexual health, particularly in relation to immigrants/refugees, youth, and BIPOC communities. Hani is passionate about equitable access to healthcare, social determinants of health, and the rights of immigrants and refugees.

Peace Olanipekun

Peace Olanipekun is a Political Science student heading into her final year at the University of Regina. A passionate social justice advocate, Peace has worked as the Outreach Director for Girl Up Canada, the Outreach Co-director for Canadian Voices Against Racism as well as the Co-Director for Future Majority Regina-Wascana. She has also been a National Statement Speaker and Canadian Delegate at the previous United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development. Currently, she is a senior correspondent with the Organization of World Peace as well as the Events Coordinator for UR POLIS.

Emily Lints

As a youth leader in the non-profit sector, Emily Lints is able to provide first person advice and experience to youth engagement work through her position as consultant and summer intern with Ivy + Dean. Emily has experience in many areas of non-profit operations such as communication, social media, fund development, and governance as she has founded her own organization, the Non-Profit Youth Leadership Network. She has recently completed her Bachelor of Arts in English at the University of Regina and will be pursuing a Masters in English Literature from the University of British Columbia in the Fall. When not continuously thinking of the next project, you can usually find Emily curled up in a blanket with a coffee and a good book.

Executive Director
Planned Parenthood Regina

Risa is a nonprofit professional from Treaty 4 territory where she lives with her partner, Paula, and children, Gaia and Ever. She is committed to supporting thriving, interconnected, and resilient communities and is passionate about leadership models that prioritize equity and justice. Risa is the current Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Regina, a role she moved into in early-2022 after seven years with Common Weal Community Arts, Saskatchewan’s only arts organization devoted solely to socially-engaged practice. Risa’s career began as a student at the University of British Columbia where she immersed herself in roles at the Vancouver Art Gallery, Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, and ArtsStarts in Schools. Since settling in Regina, she has contributed to Saskatchewan’s vibrant arts sector through positions at SK Arts, Regina Folk Festival, and the MacKenzie Art Gallery. Additionally, she is an active volunteer who currently serves on the Board of Directors of Briarpatch Magazine and Regina Folk Festival. When she’s not working, Risa is a travel-loving, adventure-seeking bibliophile who finds joy in live music, bold colours, and the expansive prairie landscape.
